On February 21st,  Brennan High School's 2nd Annual Literacy Night attracted community members of all ages to come together in a carnival-like setting to celebrate literacy! The event was totally student-run as six student organizations participated. The event is the brainchild of Brennans' librarian, Harry Ostlund, whose original intent was to showcase Brennan's 21st century library as a mecca for literacy. Brennan had over 600 attendees and distributed over 5,000 books to students, in one fabulous night. This literacy night led to the Brennan Library being the recipient of the 2019 Shirley Igo Award for best event sponsored by a library and PTSA in the state of Texas. In April, Harlan High School replicated the event by having over 500 students attend their literacy night with over 2,000 books being distributed. We invite you to learn how you can create your own literacy night that connects high schools, elementary schools, and the community around a love of reading.

Harlan is Northside's newest high school, with a future-ready state-of-the-art library. Come hear how I involved the student body, community, and future Harlan Hawks in a Literacy Night in which 500 youngsters left with a bundle of free books!
